Soda Ash Safety

Soda Ash, or sodium carbonate is sometimes used with lime for water softening and pH adjustment.

A copy of an SDS for Soda Ash from Deep South Chemical shows this substance as primarily an irritant. It is especially irritating to the eyes.

The dust is irritating to the respiratory system and it can also irritate skin.

Ensure safe handling and storing procedures per the SDS. A ventilation system should be installed to minimize operators' exposure to dust. Try to avoid creating dust clouds with the material, and wear appropriate personal protection including eye protection, gloves, and dust masks, as recommended in the SDS.

NIOSH provides a Chemical Safety Card on the chemical.
